YMWIC Summer Upward Bound Program
June 20, 2022 - July 29, 2022
A group of Coatesville High School Upward Bound Scholars took part in our Summer Program. In addition to brushing up on academics, Scholars participated in a combination of learning and fun experiences including STEM-related activities, robotics labs, development of practical and professional skills, and the development of leadership qualities. The Program included daily lunch, academic preparedness, mentoring, leadership development, networking, sports, golf every Wednesday, and much more. They completed research projects on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in society and the workplace.
Scholars prepared for their futures by visiting Lincoln University for a college tour and gained first-hand college experiences. Speaking with University Admissions personnel answered a number of questions. All of these Scholars will be first-generation college students. To ensure Scholars had a deeper understanding of the education required for various careers, visits and tours were scheduled at DePuy Synthes – the Orthopaedics Company of Johnson & Johnson, the New Bolton Center, PECO offices, and Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station, which is operated by Constellation Energy. Throughout the six-week camp, there was a strong emphasis on STEM-related careers.
The culmination of their summer experience was a dinner at the Penn Oaks Golf Club. Scholars and their families enjoyed a delicious buffet meal with YMWIC Partners and Staff. Scholars were able to show off the results of their research projects, as well as their presentation skills at an impromptu Q & A Panel Discussion.
